A century and a half - and the story continues

Memories are a remarkable thing. The past inevitably seems more beautiful, sunnier and better than the present. We remember ever more beautiful colors, sweeter tastes and greater adventures. At De Klerk Binnenbouw , it's exactly the same.

It is with pride and pleasure that we look back on our history. A history with many milestones, successes and victories. But even though our story now spans a century and a half, we still prefer to look forward rather than back. Our 150th anniversary, in 2023, will therefore be primarily about the future.

In 1873, Hendrik Hubertus de Klerk began manufacturing and selling braided carpets and mats. It was the first step towards a company that would become not only the Netherlands' largest department store for interiors and furniture, but also a leading international brand in exclusive yacht interiors. After nearly one hundred years of growth and innovation, De Klerk acquired Koninklijke Meubelfabriek H.P. Mutters & Zoon in the 1970s. In doing so, the company added an impressive interior design tradition to its own history, which extended from furnishing royal palaces and yachts to furniture for legendary airplanes and ocean liners. Since 2015, De Klerk Binnenbouw has been part of the Royal De Vries Shipbuilding group.

During our anniversary year, we place our historical achievements in a contemporary perspective. We take you along the backdrop of our history, in Rotterdam and The Hague. The grand anniversary party aboard the SS Rotterdam, celebrating the Roaring Twenties, will be an evening of pure nostalgia.

In 2023, however, the main focus is on DKB's current creative strength and ambition. During the first part of the year, young and promising artists will mark the occasion with a unique, tangible work of art. We will report regularly online on the work in progress.

On Saturday, June 17, we will open the doors of our headquarters to the public and open a special exhibit, focusing on both the past and the craft of today. Our enduring passion for craftsmanship is also reflected in our DKB anniversary logo.

At De Klerk Binnenbouw we will make 2023 a jubilee year filled with surprises. Do you want to keep a close watch on everything that's going on? Visit this website for impressions, reports and program updates, throughout the year.
